Phil Maloney is a Canadian musician and filmmaker from St. John’s Newfoundland, who is best known as the drummer of the indie-rock band Hey Rosetta!
Due in part to his musically rich lineage and his musically proficient province, Phil has been immersed in music his entire life. He began at the age of 5 by playing piano for 6 years until entering into the percussion world. He explored percussion through his high school jazz band and the orchestral Avalon East District Band for 6 years. During this time, he went on to play in the orchestra pit for three musicals which is where he met Josh Ward, bassist of Hey Rosetta!, and was quickly ushered into the band. Since 2007, Phil has played with Hey Rosetta! as well as a variety of other bands spanning many genres including the instrumental heavy rock band “Surgeon” and his brother’s band “Steve Maloney & The Wandering Kind”. Phil uses C&C drums, Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals, Vater sticks, Evans heads and Shure in-ear monitors. Phil continues to expand his skill set and musical development through the piano, guitar and accordion.
Along with music, Phil’s passion lies in filmmaking. In his spare time he films and produces pieces for musicians, artists and small businesses in his community including a live, feature-lenght production for Hawksley Workman.
Phil currently lives in St. John’s, NL.
